So, if you are considering becoming a vegetarian, make sure you are getting all the essential nutrients. Let us look at them.
Deficiency of Vitamin B-12
As some of the biggest sources of Vitamin B-12 are fish, shellfish, meat, eggs, milk and their by-products, vegetarians are at an early risk of mental disorder such as dementia and alzheimer’s. Lack of Vitamin B-12 reduces the brain’s working capacity and results in progressive memory loss.
Vegetarian Junk Food
Most of the time, people do go veggie but instead of having a well planned healthy diet end up eating a lot of processed foods, which may not be very healthful. These vegetarians may fall sick or gain weight.
According to the recent World Health Organization survey, alzheimer’s and dementia patients are on the rise and the figure is projected to nearly double in the coming years. But once diagnosed, these patients respond very well to vitamin B-12 supplements.
The key is to get sufficient nutrients from a variety of foods. Ask your doctor and take any food supplements if necessary.
